Save Money on Vacation by Renting a Timeshare

Order NowRedWeek is honored to have Chrissy Pate, author of Be CentsAble: How to Cut Your Household Budget in Half , and co-founder of BeCentsAble.net, guest-write for us this month and share with you the financial benefits of renting a timeshare. As an added bonus, Chrissy is raffling off a copy of her book. To enter into the book raffle, simply e-mail us at support@redweek.com by June 30, 2010, with "Book Raffle" in the subject line. The winner will be chosen at random on July 1, 2010.

My family loves to travel! When we travel we usually rent timeshares because it gives us more space to spread out making it easier to travel with children. Another big benefit of renting a timeshare is all the money we save. Renting timeshares has helped us save hundreds of dollars on vacation. Here are three ways we save money by renting a timeshare:

  1. Cook meals - Most timeshares have fully stocked kitchens so you can cook instead of eating out. One of the biggest expenses on vacation is eating out; you can save a ton of money by cooking a few meals. Make sure to plan easy meals that don’t require a lot of time, like spaghetti or tacos.
  2. Cut out the middle man - We always rent directly from the owner and cut out the agency or management firm to save big. Management firms can charge up to 50% or more for owners to list their properties. Owners can save a ton of money by listing the unit themselves and pass that savings on to you! Sites like RedWeek make it easy to rent directly from the owner.
  3. Travel with a family - To save even more money you can travel with family or friends and split the cost. There are four-bedroom penthouse units available on RedWeek.com for only $169/night! Split that with another family, and it's cheaper than any hotel with all the same amenities.

To learn more about ways to save money on travel, groceries, entertainment, and gift giving, visit BeCentsable.net, or follow them on Facebook or Twitter. For saving strategies at your fingertips, order a copy of Chrissy's book today.

Ask the Timeshare Crusader

Our "Ask the Timeshare Crusader" series continues this month with a question from Stephanie:

I've been on three timeshare sales presentations, looked at ads on RedWeek, eBay, and Craigslist, and am more confused than ever about timeshare. All I read in the media is bad news: poor investments, scams, people who can't sell their timeshare for even $1. My family and I like to travel but we've outgrown a standard hotel room. Why is buying timeshare so complicated? Should I buy a timeshare? How?

Lisa Ann Schrier

If it makes you feel better, you are not alone. Most consumers are confused when it comes to timeshare and unfortunately, there is a little unbiased information out there to assist. Let me clear a few things up…

"We just returned from week 52 in December at the resort. Very nice, we will definitely go again. Our first morning we woke up to breakfast on the deck. Great room service. Over all it was very clean, the staff was very friendly, the hotel in excellent shape. The service was spectacular everywhere we went. The restaurants that we ate at in the hotel were excellent, the Sunday Brunch is number one rated in PVR."
