Pet-Friendly Travel Tips: Where To Go — And How To Get There!

published on June 15, 2023 by

There’s no need to leave your furry friend at home when you go on vacation. Fortunately, with the increasing popularity of pet-friendly travel, you no longer have to choose between adventure and spending time with your beloved pets. In this blog post, we will explore some fantastic destinations and resorts that cater to pets and offer a few practical tips on how to make your trip smooth and enjoyable for everyone involved.

San Diego: A Pet-Friendly Paradise

Located on the sunny coast of southern California, San Diego is renowned for being a pet-friendly city, offering a welcoming and inclusive environment for dogs. The city boasts an extensive network of dog parks, where dogs can romp and socialize off-leash, and many beaches that welcome four-legged friends to frolic in the sand and surf. One of the most popular beaches is called — appropriately — Dog Beach. This expansive stretch of the famed Ocean Beach is as scenic as it is fun, with plenty of room dogs and their humans.

Where To (Sit And) Stay: Located in Carlsbad, one of the San Diego area’s top oceanside communities, the Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara welcomes one pet up to 85 pounds for an added fee. Upon arrival, your pup will be showered with treats, and the hotel provides comfy beds and bowls.

Cabo San Lucas: Dogs At Land’s End

Set along the stunning southern tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula, Cabo San Lucas draws travelers year-round for its luxury resorts, gorgeous beaches and exciting nightlife. But not many know that it’s a very pet-friendly destination, too. One of Cabo’s most iconic landmarks is the Land’s End Arch, an awesome seaside rock formation with remarkable views. Dogs are welcome at the beach here, so your four-legged companion can enjoy those views, too.

Where To (Sit And) Stay: Casa Dorado at Medano Beach, one Cabo San Lucas’ most upscale resorts, is located right alongside the beach. Dogs up to 40 pounds are allowed here for an extra charge of USD $100 per stay.

Gatlinburg: A Southern Escape For You & Your Canine

Gatlinburg, nestled in Tennessee’s picturesque Smoky Mountains, offers plenty of exciting activities for you and your furry friend to enjoy together. Go on a refreshing hike along one of the many dog-friendly trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most popular national park in the U.S. From scenic overlooks to cascading waterfalls, the natural beauty here will captivate both you and your canine companion. Or take a relaxing stroll through the Mills Dog Park, where your dog can socialize and play with other four-legged friends while you take in the stunning mountain views.

Where To (Sit And) Stay: Located adjacent to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Westgate Smoky Mountain Resort & Water Park is both family- and pet-friendly! The resort allows Up to 2 dogs per unit (combined weight of both pets must not exceed 60 pounds).

A Few Important Tips For Traveling With Pets

  • Plan Ahead: Consider factors such as transportation, accommodation, and activities that are suitable for pets. If you’re traveling by car, ensure your pet’s safety by using a secured crate or a safety harness. Make frequent stops for bathroom breaks and exercise. If you’re flying, check with the airline for their pet policies and requirements, such as crate size and documentation.
  • Pack Pet Essentials: Just like humans, pets require certain essentials while traveling. Beyond food and water, make sure you bring necessary medications your pet may need and ensure you have copies of their medical records, vaccination certificates, and identification tags. Comfort items are key, too. Familiar objects such as their bed, blanket, or favorite toys can help ease a pet’s anxiety in unfamiliar surroundings.
  • Maintain Routines: Pets thrive on routine — mealtimes, exercise and rest — so try to keep them as consistent as possible during your vacation. Be mindful of their stress levels and provide them with quiet spaces if needed. Keep an eye on their behavior, appetite, and overall health to address any issues promptly.
