The Geiranger Fjord, submitted by A. DeCrites, Chicago

Located in the southwestern part of Norway, the Geiranger Fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most popular tourist sites in Norway.

During the summer there is lush green vegetation and thundering waterfalls. There is very little habitable shore area, so the two villages in the fjord remain small.

A few scattered abandoned farms are undergoing restoration, and can be visited by boat. The cliff sides are so steep that the early farmers had to fasten bridges to the rock walls with iron bolts.

Kayaking, hiking, and sight-seeing boat tours are all available.
