I'm considering purchasing my first time share. I'm looking into purchasing a Marriott 2bd in Las Vegas during a red week. My wife and I are not really into Vegas but I figure we would have an easy time exchanging it for Marriott red weeks in Hawaii, Aruba, Desert Springs, or elsewhere. The Las Vegas price is lower than the price in Hawaii. I was also considering a Marriott in Orlando and maybe even Boston with the same thought...to have trading power through Marriott to exchange for places I would much rather go to but not willing to pay the higher price. Any thoughts?
Marriott is a great brand , however like everything, there are guide lines to timeshare. If you like LasVegas buy in LasVegas. But dont assume that you will get more power over a Hawaii or Hilton Head week in the summer. Many people BUY their time share for the location they like. This way they enjoy it for what it is. You will get privileges in the Marriott group, but remember if the Hawaii time share cost more why do you think?
I used to live in Marina del Rey, on the beach. Every time I was home, I was on vacation. Everyone else came there for a vacation. One time, an astronaut rented next door for 3 mos. R&R. (Thank you G-d.)

I bought where I wanted to go most, but that was way back when no one had really heard of timeshares, or took them seriously.

I still think my instincts are good. Buy where you like the most, then you can trade for what you like. As far as buying resale vs. hotel/developer, there is a price difference, so see if you want what is offered. Ask why the difference, ask how trades work, and check with these sites for reality testing.

You don't always get what you pay for, but you surely don't get what you don't pay for. Research, research, research.
