Re: Considering to Buy a Timeshare (by Tim A.):
Here is my best advice. Never buy from the developer. What we've found that works very well for us is that sometimes, older is better. We own several of the older fixed week timeshares. That means we go to the same resort, stay in the same unit, and in the same week of every year. We're retired, so the travel date limitations are not an issue. The main advantage is the cost of getting into a fixed week timeshare can be quite low. I've paid as much as $3000 and as little as $300 for our weeks. Yes...you will have yearly maintenance fees, and yes...they do tend to go up. But that applies to almost everything in life. Once you decide that the fixed week unit no longer meets your needs, you can sell it. It may appreciate in value over time, or it may not. But you can usually get something for it, even if it's just a few hundred bucks. With our particular fixed week units, we've had no problems trading/exchanging/renting them when we wanted to. The point programs that you buy from the developer "sound" really good. They offer a lot of flexibility. But they are very expensive on the front end, and they can also be difficult to get rid of. So...buyer beware.
