Another upfront fee scammer shut down by KS Attorney General .... Hays KS

HAYS, Kansas – A Hays business has been forced to shut down by the state’s attorney general after several consumer complaints to the Better Business Bureau.

“Shocked, very shocked,” said Tobias Jones, operator of Global Resorts Condos Plus.

Jones is reacting to the attorney general’s restraining order against his company. Jones says he ran a satellite office for the Florida-based company at his tax and accounting office in Hays, hoping to make a few extra bucks. But business was slow, so he backed out of the deal last month.

“With the economy the way it was -- we started in July and we were done by the first of November, because with the way it was we couldn't get people to buy a marketing and advertising agreement -- maybe one every two or three weeks,” Jones said. “So it just wasn't worth the time or money.”

But the Better Business Bureau alleges that the condo business was a scam after getting several consumer complaints from across the country.

“They'll tell the consumer that they have someone to purchase the timeshare and that they need to work quickly and move fast and we need a credit card and you need to give us up front a couple thousand dollars,” said Roberta Namee with the Better Business Bureau of Kansas.

But Jones says his sales reps were up front that the money was strictly for advertising that someone’s timeshare was for sale.

“I did not do any of the calling or anything, but I was here at the location,” Jones said. “And not one of the people misrepresented anything.”

Now the business is trying to get back to just doing taxes while trying to clear its name.

Jones has been subpoenaed to officially give his side of the story to the AG later this month.
