Many, many people have come on these boards wondering if these questionably sounding offers are legit, especially for timeshares in Mexico. Simply put, over 99% of these offers are scams.
If they phoned you unexpectedly, offered an unreasonably high amount for the sale (anything over $1000), and claimed that the sale was guaranteed, then you can be certain it is a scam.
We see and hear of this type of scam on these boards all the time. What these clowns will do is tell you that they've secured a buyer who's put a large deposit into escrow. Now, in order to complete the sale, you have to wire some money into escrow for some imaginary tax or fee. They claim that that money will be refunded to you when the paperwork is finalized.
After you wire them the money, they'll take off into oblivion with your money, disconnect all forms of communication you had with them, and you will be out all that money.
