It's not hard to believe. The cost is called advertising. Again, RedWeek charges a modest $15 yearly membership to be allowed to post ads for $60. TUG has a $15 annual fee. Bidshares and Craigslist are free. My Resort Network charges $50.

So yes, there is an upfront cost to try to procure a buyer. It just does not have to be exorbitant.
