The reason that these charities want thousands of dollars for you to "donate" is because they need the buffer of 1-3 years' maintenance fees in case they can't quickly turn around and sell it or give it away.

If you want to get rid of your unit for under $2000, try advertising that you are willing to give it away and offer to pay closing cost ($200-400) plus the next maintenance fee. You might get some takers.

And be careful of some operations that offer to take your timeshare from you for "only" $1100 or less. They are likely operating what many in the timeshare industry refer to as the "Viking Ship" scheme which can possibly lead to problems for you down the road.
