Buying, Renting, and Selling Timeshares

Fun Way to Acquire a TS

May 12, 2007

I found a 4-color glossy flier in the LATimes today.

It has a banner headline "Paradise for Sale" and a subheading of "Home in La Quinta-Vacation in Hawaii Every Year." Next is a half-page photo of what appears to be a Pacific island. Of course, a silver-haired couple is dancing and smiling in an insert.

The deal is if you purchase a new home at La Quinta's Desert Cove, which start in the $700's, you will get a 2-week vacation every year in Hawaii, but only at Desert Cove and only for a short time. Step right up.

In the very fine print you learn it is through Marriott Vacation Club, and that annual maintenance fees and "dues" apply. Hohoho. Is that you, Santa?

It seems this short time offer also happened back in Aught Five, if you read Tug.

I guess it takes Marriott to sell a house these days, even if the freebie costs you annually, including maintenance, dues and airline tickets. What a racket.
