Buying, Renting, and Selling Timeshares

New and this doesnt look like a good thing

Is there any positive note regarding time shares? Im looking,at least I was looking, for a unit on Hilton Head. After doing the math and reading these forums, I see no reason to purchase. I was specifically looking at a unit in Port O'Call. The ad was not from an individual, but a company and their replies to some very specific questions give vague a new meaning. They were asking 7K for a fixed week. After reading almost every forum, I made an offer of 2K. No word back yet and I almost hope there isn't.

Unless you are looking for a specific resort, specific week (ex. red hot summer week or a holiday week) in a specific area of a resort (ex. beachfront, pool view, special unit location) I don't recommend buying when there are SO MANY rentals on the internet now. When you buy a timeshare you are then responsible for rising maintenance fees and possible special assessments until you sell it. Renting is far less hassle than owning. JMHO

If you do decide to buy, check out if once you buy you are locked into only one exchange company such as RCI. I bought "weeks" instead of points at my resort. It turns out that weeks members are only allowed to exchange through RCI. I wanted to try Interval International because they have some Disney resorts you can trade for but it turns out I can't exchange with II. Joan
