Buying, Renting, and Selling Timeshares

Me Cabo timeshare rental a cautionary tale!

Feb 22, 2010

I am not trying to assign blame and if it comes off that way I apologize but I want others to learn from my experience as I have learned so much from many others on different forums.

1) I rented a one week timeshare at the ME Cabo through an owner from Redweek. I happened to go earlier on check in day (11:00 a.m. for a 4:00 p.m.) and asked if it would be o.k. to check in and hold my bags until the room was ready. They were very accommodating called the timeshare manager Mr. Aldo Vizcarra over and I checked in pending the room being ready.

2) The room was ready at the time they said it was except it was a room with a double bed. I specifically asked for a king when I made the reservation on July 15. The July 15 letter from GBS said that the unit type would be for a Studio King Bed with the remarks saying Ocean view (no problem there). When I went to Mr. Vizcarra the first time he said they had no way of knowing that I wanted the King bed room as I didn’t tell them and that they only know what is in the remarks section from GBS. He also stated that there was nothing they could do for me because all of the rooms I wanted were booked for the entire week and were unlikely to open up this was at 3:30. After a back and forth slightly angry on my side I let it go.

3) I went back up to my room because something didn't seem right and found my extra copy of the reservation letter and clearly marked was the studio king for the unit type. When I showed it to him Mr. Vizcarra was clearly not interested and said the mistake was not theirs despite it being up two lines on the page. He said the mistake was with GBS and they should have put it in the remarks section and not in the section that lists the type of unit. I asked what he was willing to do to make it up to me and he said there was nothing they could do and he offered nothing else not a drink, dinner, massage nothing. Had I not prepaid I would have left paid more somewhere else and disputed the charge one thing you can't do when renting from an owner.

4) So who made the mistake? At that point it was irrelevant who made the mistake or the miscommunication if one was actually made. I didn't know and still don't know perhaps I did but I dropped it at that point to enjoy the rest of the trip. I did e-mail the owner to inform her what happened and received no response despite not asking for anything and just writing to inform her what happened. Perviously she was great to deal with but I suppose she expected that I wanted to get what I paid for and was looking for something.

Moral of the story is when I (or I suggest anyone else) rent a timeshare again I would suggest making sure the remarks section lists every single thing you are looking for even if it is somewhere else on the page. I clearly expected a King studio and rented it accordingly and did not get what I rented so make sure it gets listed in both areas so as to minimize excuses for mistakes.
