How Can You Insure That You Don't Get Ripped Off When Renting Timeshares?

I have never rented a timeshare from a private party before. How can I be sure that I am not scammed by someone who doesn't own the timeshare that they are trying to rent to me? How can I protect myself from other scams when it comes to renting timeshares?
