Using online escrow service for payment

Jun 21, 2012

I'm interested in renting a condo from redweek but I feel more comfortable using the online escrow service then dealing with the owner directly. Has anyone had experience with this service? Do sellers prefer to use this or deal directly with the renter?

I've never had any experience with this service (First American Title) personally, but from all reports, it seems legit.

That being said, there are a few things you should be aware of before using this service.

1) They charge a $100 fee. So it would have to be established as to who would pay this fee - you, the landlord, or split.

2) First American Title gives the renter no fewer than 60 days to cancel. So let's say you, as the renter, decided that 60 days before check-in, you decide to cancel, the landlord now only has 60 days to find another renter. That's another reason why many landlords prefer not to use this service.

3) The landlord does not get his money until 11 days after checkout. That's yet another reason why many landlords prefer not to use this service.

There's some advice at the top of this page to follow if you feel uncomfortable renting from a RedWeek owner.

You would still have to deal with the owner of the week regardless if you choose to use an escrow service or not. Many renters and owners do not use escrow but there should be a contract in place by the owner stipulating the terms of the rental and signed by both parties. You can find a sample rental agreement by searching forums.
