Buying, Renting, and Selling Timeshares

Timeshare Successfully Dumped

Sep 07, 2012

I just dumped my worthless timeshare that I've owned since it was "gifted" to me from my parents in 2004. There are too many of these wonky companies out there that promise one thing and don't deliver, or they do deliver and clean your wallet out.

I got an attorney involved. He went through the deed and find a very minor problem in the wording that in the end resulted in a technicality, so after $150 for him to write a letter to the management company, their attorney got involved. We weren't really expecting them to do that, but in the end they let me deed the property back to them. I only had to pay 2 years of maintenance fees. Mine are only around $330 a year which is on the low side. So, after attorney fees and $670 I'm out!

I wanted to post this in an effort to educate folks who are at a dead end on getting rid of theirs. Call a real estate attorney in the state that your property is in. If it worked for me, it can work for others too.

It seems to me you had no money into buying this timeshare as it was gifted. Why didn't you rent the week out each year even for $500 then you would have a positive cash flow, instead of paying $670 to give it back. {Im Just Sayin}

Renting a timeshare is not as easy as it would seem. It depends on the supply and demand of the resort and time owned.

Hi,

I really like your honest post. I have one also to dump. Can you recommend the attorney you used? I'm in California, so I need a Florida attorney, right?

Thank you, Valerie valeriemdoss@gmail.com

I don't see why you would need an attorney to dump a timeshare. If you want to dump it, list it in RedWeek's Bargain Basement for $1 or free. You can also try Bidshares, My Resort Network, or E-bay.

Also, Timeshare Users Group (aka "TUG"; tugbbs.com) has a Bargain Deals section where you can list for free that you want to give your timeshare away. Just follow the directions at the top of that page.

But do not pay anyone a large, upfront fee to sell, rent out, market, or "cancel" your timeshare. Any company asking for a large fee upfront to do one of these things is a scam operation.

An attorney can't help you to merely dump a timeshare .... there was a technical error in jerry's contract which the attorney found.

Are you living in the U.S.?? I've asked our lawyer in Canada about getting rid of timeshare and he told us the laws are different and that we would have to get an American lawyer.

Totally Frustrated!!

One more time, unless there's a technical error (as was in the OP's contract) in your contract then no lawyer can help you merely rid yourself of your timeshare.

As lance stated why don't you try giving it away in Redweek's Bargain Basement, and for extra incentive offer to pay maintenance fees and closing costs.
