Buying Marriott Vacation Club Resale
Need clarification...if we purchase a Marriott Resale through a Red Week posting, would the reservation for the timeshare still be made through Marriott's website? Also can it be deposited with Interval International for regular exchange? We are current Marriott owners and have an II account...would we have to establish a new membership to handle the exchange or can we use our Marriott II Membership? Understand that it probably can't be exchanged for Marriott Reward or Destination Points...is this also correct?

If you buy a resale from anywhere or anyone, you will ultimately have to deal with Marriottt. First Marriott has the right of first refusal so in order to purchase the timeshare, they have to basically okay you to buy it because they can buy it from the owner at the price you offered first. If they don't execisse that right, then you can proceed with your sale. If you have a Marriott Interval International account you can place your resale on it. However, if you belong to the DC and have a Marriott Interval International account from the points system then you cannot add your resale to that account. No you will not be able to get Marriott Rewards points or Destination points with this purchase since it is after they June 2010 deadline. I hope this answers your questions.

A brief add-on to Charles' message re Interval accounts - We have two Interval accounts. The new one relates to the new Vacation Club and houses deposits/trades of "enrolled" weeks; and, the old one is used for deposits/trades of after market weeks acquired. Both are Marriott Interval accounts and both are serviced by the same Marriott Interval desk. A separate membership fee is required for the 2nd account.

We're non-owners, thinking of buying some points directly from Marriott as new "owners", plus a resale week, and maybe renting a week through redweek when appropriate. The idea would be to have some control and flexibility in where to stay, length of stay, and be cost-effective. Is this workable, and what should we be concerned about?

If you want to find a fab timeshare resale in one of the European resorts like Marriott's Marbella Beach Resort, Marriott's Club Son Antem, Marriott's Playa Andaluza or Marriott's Village d'lle de France look for the Marriott Vacation Club European timeshare resale Specialists at the top of google. Only go with a TATOC regulated broker and try find one that have sales offices near the resorts as they will have the most choice in inventory that is available with the best prices.
Stay off EBay if you want to be safe and not messed around by a seller that doesn't know what they are doing.

Marriott is selling new points at $9 or $10 a point. Like everything else in timeshares, buying from the developer is way more than your other choices. I recommend just renting the points you need on vacationpointexchange.com. Points are way more expensive than weeks for many reservations. Some owners of rental weeks (20-30-40 week owners ). Are offering points to rent at 50-60 cents. This is a great deal compared to 43 cents maintenance and ten dollar purchase. If you want to add, I recommend you add weeks not points. See TUG forum for comments on buying.

The points are selling for almost $12.00 per point with Marriott.

The "VAC" stock is up too. It seems the stock goes up everytime they tell someone to buy because the price per point is going up. I suspect the price per point will eventually exceed the perceived value even in the high pressure sales environment. My legacy weeks look better all the time and my weeks acquired privately were a real bargain.

I did buy a few points in the secondary market. Be careful, Marrioott adds a fee $2,000 minimum plus $600 if new to the points system. This increases the cost of buying 1,000 points by $2.60 a point. Best to calculate total cost with this transfer fee divided by points. I payed under $6 including cost for a 1,500 point EBay auction. ( look in completed auctions at $5,600)
Want to buy points , still no reason to pay retail. Several reputable agents are selling at $4- $5 plus costs.

Davids819,
We would like to pick up well priced points Marriott points. We have deeded weeks with points option now.
If we do acquire additional points on the secondary market are we going to be charged the $2,000, the $600 or both?
Any additional tips on buying Marriott or other developer points on the secondary market would be greatly appreciated.

John, you would have to pay the $2000 beneficial interest minimum plus. If you already are already in the Destinations Club then you would NOT have to pay the $300 education fee.
Doing this allows you to have unrestricted DC points. This meanings the points would be as if you bought them directly from Marriott and would give you regular reservation opportunities and the points will also count to Premier and Premier Plus levels in the program.
