Smoke tolerant resorts

Mar 31, 2008

I am looking to purchase a Timeshare in NJ. I am a smoker and would like to know if any resorts allow smoking. Is this something that is always listed like "no pets"? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Teresa

=========== I don't know of any specific resorts, but keep in mind ther eis nothing to stop the resort from changing the policy in the future.

Mike makes an excellent and valid point here. While VERY few timeshare facilities have ever allowed pets and those that haven't done so before (and don't now) never will. So it's very easy to just consistently announce and publicize that info (in exchange directories and elsewhere) that "no pets are allowed here".

For smoking policies, however, it's a very different story. Smoking policies can and do change. Such policies are increasingly moving toward outright bans on ANY smoking on the premises. This has been the case within just the past few years at three different facilities at which I own weeks, where smoking was previously permitted but is now banned outright. I fully expect that such smoking bans will spread (and as a non-smoker, that's just fine with me, although I've never participated in the campaigns to ban smoking at any of my timeshare ownerships).

It's relevant to acknowledge that at any timeshare facility, each and every unit will be used by 50 (or more) different "occupant groups" in the course of every single year. Non-smoking owners (who are the statistical majority) are increasingly and completely intolerant of arriving to use their week, only to promptly discover that their unit smells like an ash tray. This REALLY annoys non-smoking owners, particularly since the origin of that (now permanent) smoke smell might very well be from renters or exchangers --- people who don't actually even own "time" there in the first place (and so don't actually pay any maintenance fees there either). So, owners (through their POA's) can (and do) implement non-smoking policies "right across the board" for their resort, reflecting the preference of a majority of the fee-paying owners --- the people whose maintenance fees actually support the facility in the first place.

In summary, with no personal judgement about smoking intended, you should fully expect that the list of timeshare facilities which allow smoking will continue to grow shorter and shorter all the time.

We have rented weeks 9&10 at the Renaissance Aruba for the past 8 years. My husband and I are both smokers. Now I find out that Marriot instilled it as a smoke free hotel, anyone know who I can contact to ask if the Ocean Suites and outside areas are also under this umbrella? If that is the case, we will be staying elsewhere in 2009.

I agree, I own at the Sheraton Vistana Resort in Orlando and with all the new re-furbished rooms now only have the ashtrays on the balconies . They have asked that smoking is not in the unit. I hope that most respect this rule. With most restaurants being a smoke free environment you are going to see most resorts with the same policy. I hate to say it but there is nothing worse then walking into a unit and having the smell of smoke from the previous occupants. Alot of these resorts have a mouldy smell in alot of rooms due to just being either in a damp place or on the water and then to top it off you add smoke to it and for any breathing problems or illnesses I find it very disrespectful. I do think that smoking should be allowed on the balaconies only. The weather is gorgeous in most cases so this should not pose a problem with anyone. In the next 5 years if you have previously owned a unit that you can smoke in , in a nice place a 4 or 5* you are going to see it as a Non Smoking resort . So when purchasing anywhere you best be prepared but if you are going to try to find smoking places you will soon I think have to stay home to smoke . Cruise ships are the same you cannot smoke in the cabins and there are designated areas on the finer cruiselines that you can smoke on . They are all coming into line with going towards a "smoke free environment". If you are going to travel to different places to find smoking resorts each year not sure if you will be on any holidays past the next 5 years thats just how it will be. So if purchasing be prepared and don't listen to what any seller will tell you.

Actually, it would be my wish that smoking even on balconies would be eliminated at all resorts, since smoke can irritate those units on either side of the balcony, below and above, especially if the neighbors are sitting on their balconies or have their balcony doors open. I have heard complaints of such many times on the various timeshare forums I read.

Smokers are the definite minority and they should not be allowed to pollute everybody else's clean air around them.

Sorry to be so blunt, but smoking related illnesses killed both my parents and I'm sure I have some residual side affects from their second hand smoke (I had asthma when I was a kid and I suffer from allergy problems now).

If you ARE looking for 'smoking allowed' resorts, my advice would be to call a resort you might be interested in beforehand. I would think there would be many in Atlantic City since it's a casino destination.

I stayed at a Key West timeshare resort this past year which actually bans smoking ANYWHERE on the ENTIRE property. That was just fine with me --- I personally despise the inevitable stench and after-aroma of cigarette smoke.

Well said and I agree wholeheartedly. Smokers should NEVER be allowed to stink up a timeshare unit for the other 50 weekly occupants who don't want to feel like they are living in an ash tray...

Don't be at all sorry for being honest and factual.

Actually I guess now I will say to be honest I wish every resort was non smoking and the non smokers could enjoy breathing fresh air. Many times we would be out on our balconies and smell the smoke and it was at breakfast!! so is this disgusting or what... why can't smokers just understand that they are killing themselves.. I buried in a 6 week timeframe my mom to lung cancer and she thought she had a cold..surprise!!!oh and next was my dad to heart !!! suprise number 2... the world is becoming smoke free so I guess you smokers better makes some choices either to quit or to accept whats ahead with changes and they won't be in your favour... so if you want to even enjoy your timeshare I suggest kicking the habit you will be healthier and happier trust me because you will still be around to enjoy what your own...

I completely agree. Being involved with timeshare security, I know that smoking on the balcony only is very difficult to enforce. Even when you can smell the smoke in the room, they can state that they were on the balcony and the smoke came in throught the slider. Complaints are constant from nearby guests. Banning smoking from the entire property gives us the power to protect the other guests on property from an abuser of the rules. It keeps them from having an out and allows us to do our jobs.

As a timeshare owner and non-smoker myself... I would rather not be affected by somebody else's bad habit.
