i know enough not to buy at a resort, too expensive. on this site, if i see a resale for say $500 with a yearly maintenance fee of $500, can i assume i will be paying the owner $500 then a yearly fee of $500 to the resort and i get a week each year? is it that easy??? are there scams on here??? i am so afraid of getting ripped off.

If maintenance fees have not been paid for the year that you take possession, then you will have to fork over the $500. Possibly rising maintenance fees are due each and every year that you will be resposible for until you sell it or give it away (ie; transfer of ownership).

Yes, it's that easy, but also be aware of possible special assessments when owning a timeshare week.

Yes, it is easy to buy, but as jayjay said rising MFs and periodic special assessments can be will increase the cost of the timeshare. $500/year for MF only means $500 for THIS year.

When you decide to buy, make sure you buy at a resort will you will want to go every year (or every other year). Buy the week and unit you want to have. If you are buying a floating week, make sure you can book a unit during the week you most likely will use.

Don't get talked into buying something less on the assumption that you can swap into something better.

My suggestion is to get at least a two bedroom. If you can get a 2 BR lock-off that would give you more flexibility.

Take your time and do your research. Go to the TUG forum (www.tugbbs.com) and ask question there regarding specific resorts and resort companies.
