Renting an Interval International Week with Guest Certificate

Sep 08, 2013

Hello All,

We have four weeks on deposit with II that we're not likely to use any time soon. Through Red Week we have rented weeks that we reserved directly with Marriott Vacation Club International, but we are a little hesitant about trying to rent a week reserved through II. When I went to confirm a reservation with a guest certificate, there was a warning that guest certificates cannot be exchanged, sold or bartered for any consideration. Has anyone done this successfully? Does II really check up on these situations. It seems unlikely that they would, given the volume that they handle, but I wanted to check before going down the road. Thank you in advance for any insight that you have.

There's a reason why that warning is there. Some have been caught doing this with II as well as RCI. Those who have been caught had the renters denied use of the unit. As well, the owner's membership gets revoked and loses any weeks or points already deposited with the exchange company.

You can try renting these out if you want but don't say you were not warned.

Another reason for this warning is to protect II and RCI's membership. If people were to be allowed to use guest certificates for profit then the best weeks would be gone in a very short time leaving the membership with only left over weeks to choose.

Before this warning was put into place people were actually making a living by exchanging for the best weeks and then renting those exchanges for a huge profit.

The guest certificate is only for friends and family with the owner making no profit nor asking for the maintenance fee cost. I know with RCI (don't know about II) the only reimbursement to the owner by the guest are the guest certificate fee and the exchange fee.

I'm sure both RCI and II have departments that monitor such activity.
