Special Assessments for Timeshare Owners

I absolutely love Hanalei Bay. We trade into it each year through GPX or rent a condo from a private owner. We've been going there for years and have watched all of the updates to the Bar being finished, the swim up bar completed, the tennis courts refinished, etc. I was staying at The Cliffs and an owner, not a timeshare owner, said he gets a special assessment every year. He said it is absolutely terrible to actually own a condo there because of the assessments. So in April I talked to a timeshare resale person and asked the question about assessments. I was told timeshare owners do NOT get assessments. Is this true???? If it is, I do not want to buy - I can just rent. Would love some feedback on you timeshare owners - please!
