Family traveling to the Wharf in late July- questions on area

We are a family of five with kids 10, 8 and 5 going to be staying in a 2 bedroom unit. What activities can you suggest in the area other than playing in the lake, boating, hiking or fishing? I read somewhere about mining for diamonds or quartz - is that close? What about items needed in the units that we should bring? And any suggstions for area family friendly restaurants would be very much appreciated.
