Looking to buy a timeshare in Destin Florida - need help

Can someone please help explain this to me? We currently own a timeshare through Wyndham and we talked to them about upgrading our points but the cost is ridiculous so we are looking into buying some extra points? Do you pay the asking price plus the maintenance fees up front? Or are the maintenance fees prorated since you are technically not needing to pay maintenance for a full year if you are buying mid-year? Any advice or help is greatly appreciated.
