Resale Scam Alert
Scammers impersonating RedWeek
Summary: if you're called by someone claiming to be from RedWeek and saying they have a buyer for your timeshare, it's a scam. Do not send them any funds and contact us immediately at fraud@redweek.com.
We've recently become aware of a new phone scam. The perpetrators are cold calling timeshare owners, claiming to be associated with RedWeek.com and saying they have a buyer for your timeshare. They ask you to send money, claiming it's needed for some aspect of the sale (e.g., closing costs, foreign taxes, transfer fees, etc.).
The scam itself is nothing new (see, for example, this, this, and this), but it's the first time we're aware of thieves impersonating RedWeek; they encourage potential victims to visit the site and read reviews of the service in order to assuage any fears. Unfortunately, those fears are justified, since RedWeek has no connection with these groups.
RedWeek is a by-owner listing service for rentals and resales. We don't make cold calls or ask for large up-front payments. We also encourage members to use a reputable, independent escrow service to hold any funds. If you think a purchase offer is "too good to be true," it probably is. Always feel free to contact us directly at support@redweek.com with any questions or concerns.
And if you believe you've been contacted by these scammers, please send any information you have to fraud@redweek.com. We are working with law enforcement to stop this scam and recover funds for the victims.
