Timeshare Points vs. Weeks

Ken, I agree with you. We have a timeshare odd year 1 week 2 bd . This makes us go on vacation and enjoy ourselves for the week and we can put it off to next year if need be. We go to Maui at the Sands of Kahana and love it. Have been going since 1997.

I have owned numerous timeshares long before points were invented . I was always able to get decent exchanges before RCI was taken over by corporate greed . I rid myself of all my timeshares except one on the Las Vegas strip which I love and go to pretty much every year . It's the best kept secret in Las Vegas . My view is the Bellagio fountains and it's right in the middle of all the best hotels and casinos . The maintenance fees are ridiculously low and they bill us quarterly so we don't get hit with a large bill the beginning of every year .

I own a week for the price of a one nights stay in any one of the surrounding hotels . I have never had a problem booking a stay and they allow us to arrive and leave any day of the week we choose . It's well maintained and updated .

I would never buy points . I would advise anyone interested in purchasing a timeshare to do their homework before they buy . There are some real good timeshares and bargains out there but they are few and far between . I would also advise anyone to purchase weeks whether fixed or floating and buy one that you plan on going to every year . I have given my week to family members to use as well in Las Vegas . I no longer exchange because of the greed in the exchange business . All good things come to an end .

Be diligent and you might find a hidden treasure out there that someone else has decided they no longer want . Good luck .

I second that idea “if you are happy with the exchanges “

Don't pay $5000 to convert. If you are happy with the exchanges you get then don't worry. If you really want points then look into giving your TS away and getting an already converted week. Grandview another Vacation Villages property in Las Vegas have prime point weeks that sell for less than $3500 and get more points then you would get from your conversion.

Based on RCI experience If you are buying into points make sure you have a deed that states a specific resort and room . Why? Inflation. If you only bought a set number of points the resorts can raise the number of points it takes to book a room, your points never go up.

I do not disagree with this input, but will note that there are also deeded "floating" week ownerships --- with NO points.

"Floating" week ownerships at a resort are still deeded, but may have NO associated "points" (consequently, they are not subject to the above referenced "inflation"). However, such ownerships do not have any guaranteed week / unit (as deeded "fixed" weeks do). I am just offering this input as a minor point of clarification. Personally, I am not at all a fan of "points" ownerships of ANY flavor, whether they are in RCI or in Wyndham or in anything else. To each their own, of course.
