When we purchased our timeshare at a Cancun resort, it was an RCI Gold Crown resort. It has since been downgraded (no crown, no nothing!). Yet we are still paying a higher maintenance fee every year. Do we write this off as a very expensive (and continuing) learning experience?

The RCI rating of a resort has nothing to do with the maintenance fees you owe the resort each year .... you still owe them, however I would certainly talk to the resort management to see why it went from a Gold Crown to a no crown.
