We just returned from our two weeks in
Princeville. The first week [12/8] was at Pahio
at Bali Hai, Unit 323 2BR/2BA overlooking the
back of the pool area. The second week
[12/15] a bonus week at Pahio at Shearwater
was fantastic. When I inquired about the unit
assigned to us, I was told unit 105. I
requested a change to an upper unit and was
assigneed to Unit 205, 2BR/2BA. This turned
out to be the penthouse with cathedral
ceilings. This unit is amazing with the view
looking over the cliffs to the ocean and
situated next to the pool and clubhouse on
the East side. Bali Hai is more roomy with
more storage for kitchen items and groceries.
Shearwater is majestic, but no space for
storing groceries. The unit has patios looking
North over the ocean and looking East over
the pool and clubhouse area.
We had never been there in December and
our concerns about rainy weather never
happened. We had one day with morning rain,
the rest of the two weeks was sunny or partly
cloudy, with occasional light showers on two
or three other days with temps in the high
70's most every day. The Hanalei beach was
much more turbulent than in the summer
months, with a couple of days of 25 foot
waves pounding the beach. Most days the surf
was 4 to 8 feet, great for body surfing or
surfing. Long walks on the Hanalei beach were
great. Annini Beach is protected by the reef
and swimming and snorkeling is great there.
Did some snorkeling at Ke'e Beach, but the
current is strong there in the winter. We drove
down to Poipu Beach and did some snorkeling
and swimming there a couple of days.
Kauai Beach Villa near the airport in Lihue is
pushing the Makai Club 1BR/1BA units for a
way to buy into the points system. However,
they wanted $4800 for EOY with a point value
of 36,000. The developer thru in an additional
36,000 points as an incentive. These units we
purchased by Pahio a couple of years ago and
still need a lot of updating. We said no thanks!
We decided Kauai is beautiful anytime of year.
It is hotter in August/September, but basically
no humidity in December. Only one day after
the rains did we feel the humidity.
The Princeville Hotel was dazzling with all the
Christmas decorations. The Luau there has
GREAT food and a GOOD show. Gaylords has
average food, but a very good show.
The Helicopter rides in December can be had
for as low as $80 per person with a time share
tour. I would recommend only Air Kauai, Will
Squyres, and Jack Harter because they have
the larger birds, with larger windows for
viewing.
For a good time in Kauai, stay at one of the
Pahio resorts or the Embassy at Poipu if you
can get in there. There is new construction
going at at Bai Hai, so avoid the units on the
West side of the complex.
Aloha
We love the food at Dukes -the Barefoot Bar,
lower level on the beach at Nawilliwilli Harbor.
Great food and low prices.
