One of the most beautiful, relaxing, and delightful places on Earth
I think Kauai - and in particular Poipu/Koloa - is one of the most beautiful, relaxing, and delightful places on Earth. And that Waiohai is a wonderful resort for an extended family - grandparents, parents, and kids - to vacation together. So much so that I bought a pair of EOY weeks and have brought my family here every other year for a decade now. That said...
Pros - Location, location, and location. You are ON Poipu beach. Put on your swimsuit, don your snorkeling gear, and enjoy one of the world's best snorkeling spots. Also a nice beach for those more into swimming and bodysurfing. This year we saw a monk seal on the beach and in previous years we've seen honu (green turtles) and whales. The pools are also quite nice and kept warmer than most of the resorts we've visited. And in general the restaurants, groceries, and other stores in Koloa/Poipu manage to hit that magic combination of gourmet and casual that the best beach towns offer.
The other major 'Pro' is that the rooms are simply fabulous. All 2 BRs, they are large, nicely appointed 3 rooms suites with a full kitchen, laundry, 3 TVs, 2 beds and 2 sofabeds. There are also BBQs downstairs for those so inclined. The grounds are beautiful with water features, flowers, and other plantings giving the resort (and the views from most of the 'Island view' rooms) that 'life in paradise' feeling. And it doesn't hurt that the staff is friendly and efficient.
Cons: The biggest problem for most Waiohai guests is the view situation. Unlike many other beach resorts (e.g. Maui Ocean Club, Hilton Hawaiian Village) Marriott chose to lump the few oceanfront view rooms into the oceanview category. So there is an expectation that your oceanview room will sit directly on the ocean. Don't worry...it won't. Similarly (though not Marriott's fault) most of what was an undeveloped property to the east became a parking lot. So a few of the 'Island View' rooms became 'parking lot view'.
The other major 'Con' is that the resort's main restaurant became part of an expanded marketplace which in turn became a small marketplace with a very limited menu. And that the Honu Bar no longer seems to use it's grill and instead relies on staff bringing burgers, etc. from a central cooking facility. So the onsite food options are now very limited compared with a decade ago. However, Poipu/Koloa's restaurant scene has exploded and you can find everything from excellent takeout sushi in a local grocery store to some of the best 'Hawaiian fusion' on any of the islands.
New (at least to us): The new fitness center is just spectacular in comparison to the old one - even if it did take over much of the space of the old marketplace. And the internet connectivity is now 1st world - unlike our first visit when it was put to shame by a 300 baud modem.
