While the resort itself is undeniably one of the most beautiful in the world, we won't be back due to fees and extra charges, expensive meals and waiting!
First the good - the art collection makes the entire property like a museum, the grounds are incredibly beautiful and the location is convenient to Kona. This is a huge island so if visiting other areas expect to drive a lot. The room was comfortable and quiet but one towel bar wasn't sufficient. The adult pool at Ocean Tower was appreciated. I also enjoyed one of the classes at the cultural center. Great sunset viewing near the tower. The luau was pretty good, not the best I've been to but we enjoyed it.
Now the bad- $39 a night for self-parking, additional charge if you rent through Redweek (not disclosed) and you'll need to add at least 30 minutes to reach any destination because of the distance from ocean tower to the parking lot and infrequency of trams. It's at least an 11 minute walk from Ocean Tower to the main lobby if you don't wait for the tram and then a minimum of another 5 to your car, depending on how near you parked. Ocean Tower is huge and our room was another lengthy walk from the elevator so do allow lots of extra time. If you choose valet parking, it's $55 a night. We ate there once at Nui Italian for dinner. Food was mediocre, portions small and overpriced. There are lots of other eating choices nearby in Queen's Marketplace and Kings Shops. Some staff was very friendly, others not so much.
There are lots of Redweek options in the Waikoloa area so choose carefully. We would not choose this one again. Incidentally we had stayed on property once before in '96 and had no complaints then.
