This is an outstanding resort. Quiet and peaceful but close enough to the action of Whalers Village and Lahina. The rooms were all gutted and remodeled in 2005-2006 with granite countertops, and vanities, new carpeting in the bedrooms and updated or new furniture. The staff is friendly and helpful and more than eager to accomodate special needs if it is within their reach. We've been going back to the Hono Koa for the last seven years and have found it to be a "slice of paradise". We even switched our ownership from another resort to the Hono Koa because when we spend our time there we feel at home!
I don't know where kathyg89 stayed but her description of the Hono Koa is totally NOT accurate. The only way she could have viewed the garbage dumpster is when she walked into the parking lot to get her car. The cleaning crew is outstanding. Any problems are addressed by the staff immediately. All rooms face the ocean or the pool. Some definitely have better views than others with the KOA's having the best with wrap-around oceanfront lanai's. But all guests have access to a fabulous over the water oceanfront deck for some of the best whale watching and sunsets on the island.

Our experience of this resort was not what you would want for a vacation. We ended up checking out and having to find other accomodations. No beach nearby, old units, smelled of urine and garbage. Close to main road, windows did not shut, property manager and property owning company did not care. There response was too bad. BBQ handles were broken off, grill dirty, pool dirty and green tiles missing. We had a view and smell of the garbage dumpster. If you are not at the front the hotel has no views. You can use the Sands of Kahana However, it is not close and they really don't welcome guests from the Hono Koa. Self check in is scary. They have a sign on the door with a picture of a burgular saying not everyone has our sense of aloha please keep valuables safe. The main office is a run down room that smelt of rats too. The management is by the Sands of Kahana who told us they cold not help us. I guess they were OK with a family being stuck in a urine filled, dirty, unit with no windows that shut. This resort is definitely not a place you would want to stay. This exchange cost us a pleasent vacation. The staff tries to sell you on all these tours to make money for themselves. Toilets were coming off the wall fitting, showers were rundown. It appeared they did a few cosmetic things to make it appear clean. The smell was terrible. It smelled like rats. We filed a complaint with photos to the Better Business Bureau and the company did not respond to the claim. Our kids were scared to stay here. Frankly, so was I. We had to find our own accomodations and shell out a considerable amount of cash. RCI did credit us the week however, we are not able t use it before the experation date. Thank you to the Kanapali Shores who heard our story and found us somewhere to stay on their gorgeous property. Disappointed in Vegas KMG

We just returned this morning from our stay at the Hono Koa... What a nice treat! We stayed in a Koa unit on the bottom floor and it was great to wake up in the morning, enjoy coffee on the lanai and watch the humback whales frolick in the water. The location was perfect. A short drive to Lahaina and Kaanapali for shopping, restaurants and more... There were also plenty of local stores, coffeehouses and activities within walking distance of the Hono Koa. A short 5 minute drive to Kapalua was very convenient to watch the Mercedes Championships golf tournament. We would have given our stay a "5 star rating" however there is no a/c and the sofas in the living area could have been more comfortable. We are not owners, but we definitely recommend a KOA unit at the Hono Koa for a nice, peaceful and relaxing stay in Maui... Trevino Family - Orange County, CA

I have to wonder about the person that left the response dated Jan 30, 2008 if they were really talking about the Hono Koa? We went there a year and a half ago and LOVED it so much we came back and bought 2 units there. It was SO clean and the units had been gutted and totally remodeled the year before that. The units have granite counters and tile floors and new everything! If you look at all the reviews of this place on EVERY site they are all great. I am really wondering if this lady has the right resort...there's a lot of places that sound alike on Maui with all their vowels! I love this place and plan to go back every year through retirement! I can't imagine someone not loving it here! The KOA units are amazing with their wrap around lanai's and complete oceanfront. You can whale watch right from the deck. The pool area was great, private and hardly used. It was a beautiful place with all the amenities of home.

We are staying at the Hono Koa this week and are again very pleased with our stay. Don't have a clue what Kathy was talking about!! Units recently remodeled and are teriffic w/granite countertops, new flooring and upgraded appliances. Bathrooms are state of the art and the views are the best. Very pleased also with Tom and Joe (staff).

I also have to wonder about the response from the person Jan 2008. I have going to Hono Koa for over 10 years now. I have had nothing but a wonderful, relaxing experience there. The pool is always crystal clear, no "dirty" smells, and a very clean unit. The staff was VERY helpful, printing out boarding passes for our return home, and even knocking at our door to let us know about the ice cream social down by the pool. The location couldn't be better, right on the ocean with the breezes coming thru, close to Lahaina and Kaanapali. I always do a late checkin because of the flight schedule, and it couldn't have gone smoother. I always feel very safe there too. Even before the renovation with updated furniture and granite counter tops, the place was beautiful. This is definitely our first choice for accomodations when we go to Maui.
Wonderful, smaller, quiet place. Koa units especially nice with the ocean breezes and wrap around patios. Fantastic location. Units clean and comfortable.

Just back from Maui and enjoyed my stay. Units are spacious with newer decor. All the amenities of Lahaina are just a few short minutes away, but these units are quiet and on the ocean (saw numerous whales from the shore)..GREAT

This Resort is breathtaking! The Koa Units are ocean front! If you are looking for a place that is not too crowded but still has everything, this is it! The staff is excellent, very helpful.

When arriving for my vacation I was suprised at the "self" checkin. I had to use a telephone to dial someone "somewhere" to provide me with a code to open the outdoor safe to obtain my key. This resort has no 24 hour staff. I was not real impressed with the room accomodations. The rooms could use some updating. I also did not like the fact that this resort has no airconditioning. The trade winds did not provide enough comfort for my guest that stayed in the room toward the back of the unit. The only aspect which was rated ok by my guests was the location of the resort. It was very near many of the best golf courses.

VERY NICE RESORT. UNITS ARE VERY NICE AND ROOMY. HAS THE ADVANTAGES OF BEING VERY QUITE AND SMALL IF YOU WANT TO RELAX AND HAVE A QUITE VACATION BUT HAS NUMEROUS ACTIVITIES TO DO WITHIN DRIVING/WALKING DISTANCE. FACILITIES AT THE SANDS OF KAHANA ARE AVAILABLE FOR USE. MAUII IS A BEAUTIFUL ISLAND !!!
