We go to St Maartin every Christmas for 2 weeks, with our son, now age 12, and have stayed at this resort and visit when we are not at our home resort, Divi Dutch Village (also a fantastic disney like theme resort). We are not members of this resort but we stay as often as we can.
This is a very homey, very clean, super friendly place with the perfect view of the water and lights, in a garden like setting overlooking the water and boats. It is the hidden GEM of the caribean. The rooms feel like a B&B suite; simple, small. It has character and is one of a kind.
The resort is small, with detached cottages in a garden setting surrounding the deck, pool, bar and outdoor resturaunt. It is very intimate, very clean, very nice, and sits on on the bluff overlooking the water.
The rooms (2 rooms per cottage, one up and one down) are small, slightly bigger than a hotel room. They are very clean, and nice.
No huge rooms, large kitchen, cookware, marble, or granite.
Just simplicity at its best.
If you have kids, or like nature, they will love staying at this resort. There are few kids, and when they come, Terri and his partner at the Kissing Fish enjoy every minute - yes, they enjoy your company and your kids. They will show your kids the pet cats, the turtles, and cook for them and treat them like a member of their own family,
At this resort, it is impossible to be one of the crowd or go unnoticed. It is just impossilbe to excape their charm.
This resort is quiet, comfortable, clean, and more like your favorite B&B. It sits in a garden like setting on a hill over the water. It is small, intimate, and so enjoyable.
You can sit, dring, eat, watch your kids splash, see the stars at night, and feel as if you were staying with friends.
This is not a ritzy place, it is a homey comfortable clean paradise hidden in St Maarin.
There are no activities, no bands, no singers, no drinking contests. You can let your kids run around and still keep an eye on them. There is no "ritz", no "snob", no "cement high rise".
Cozy, comfortable, comforting, relaxing, and friendly.
The Kissing Fish resturaunt and bar is the center of this resort. You can't escape the charm of Terri, the cook or others. They are so down to earth, so friendly, you will soon think of them as friends.
We go back to the Kissing Fish every time we are there even if we aren't lucky enough to be able to stay at this resort (we are owners at Divi Little Bay, another wonderful place to stay that feels more like a Disney land resort).
The Kissing Fish is the heart of this resort, and is one of the best places to eat on the island. You sit outdoors, on the deck, near the pool, overlooking the water.
You sit with great friendly people that really enjoy your company, treat you like family members, are truely intersted in you, your family, your kids, and make every effort possible to make you happy.
For dinner, call ahead to see what is available, as Terri does not cook every night, but when he does, it is simply fantastic. The bar is open, have a drink, sit by the pool, and view the water. The bar tender is a wondeful soul, loving, kind, and hey - she can mix a drink like no other. And, don't expect a crowd unless they are hosting an event. This is small and intimate.
If you need food, just walk outside your door and Terri will fix something for you (cheap) and fabulous and - skip the grocery store - don't cook, don't cleaning, have a real vacation.
I have yet to understand those that want a full complete kitchen on vacation. If cost is an issue - the Kissing Fish is so reasonable, it is almost as cheap as cooking - and the food is high quality, you won't get a bad meal.
When we are in St Maartin, we go to a different beach everyday (Orient Beach, La Rouge and a few others are our favorites). We may hit the tourist spots, visit our newest friend in his cigar and liquor store, or go on an excursion (yes, the "activites and tours)".
We like eating where the big boats (huge multi gazzilion dollar yachts) dock in the marina. There is a good pizza place right there, and a few other great resturants. We sometimes are lucky enough to sit and enjoy talking to one of the young european's that work on these yachts. Meeting new people is what life is all about.
There is just so much to do. Or, better said, so little time to do nothing other than eat, go to the beach, and meet new people and talk with old friends we have met through the years.
You can't get bored or even get too much of Orient beach. This beach is happenin', and reminds moe of the French Riveria.
Lots of great waves, safe swimming, outdoor resturaunts, shops, bars, entertainment - all family friendly.
You may see topless women, but it all feels natural when you are there. It seems so normal, you got to wonder whay americans are so uptight.
If you get bored and really need the commercial touristy atmosphere, go downtown on the dutch side. There you will find every type of store and resturaunt, shop 'til you drop
If you want to feel like you are in Paris, go to the french side (my favorite) and shop til you drop at very expensive little shops, or smaller lower cost cute places.
Eat on the French side at the marina hey - its expensive but where else can you get this fantastic french food?
Try (a new friend) Jimmy B's under the tree. He is a former chef now BBQ'ing under a tree in St Maartin. He will even sit down, talk with you, have a drink with you while you enjoy the most mouthwatering BBQ food. Soon he will be your 'old freind and you will go back as often as you can both for the food the atmosphere or lack thereof', and his good company and unqiue character.
Again if you want the high rise, super lux, crowded resorts with huge rooms - this probably is not the place for you.
If you want quaint, comfortable, clean, homey, friendly, charming - stay here for a week, and you will love every minute.
This place is absolutely the worst on the whole island. The rooms have old horrible furniture and you can hear what everyone says and does in the joining room. I have been going to St. Maarten for 16 years, several times a year and would never stay there again unless it was free and even then would have to give it some thought.
This place is great. The rooms have been updated and it is very quiet/secluded, yet it is just a short drive (you can walk) to a casino and several gourmet restaurants. It has a nice pool and a great bar/grill called the Kissing Fish. We have stayed there every year for the last several years and really enjoyed it.
The location is a little out of the way, but can walk to Maho in about 15 to 20 minutes (or drive in five). I loved the atmosphere. I'd get up in the morning and do laps while I was waiting for my breakfast. The Kissing Fish Staff does an excellent job of making you feel welcome and basically cooking up whatever you like and making sure your stay is as pleasant as possible.
The only problem is if there is alot of rain, the road gets washed out. We were there in November and it rained and rained and rained. We spent alot of time trying to figure out how to get through the flooded area. Problematic, but not impossible.
I'd recommend the Summit for the privacy loving vacationer. You can sit beside the pool with a good book, a lovely view, and pass the day away basking in the Caribbean breeze. If you get thirsty, the Kissing Fish Staff can accommodate you.
Very secluded location, good if you want to relax by the pool. No access to a beach but a beautiful view of the bay. Nice homey atmosphere at the bar and the cafe. We've stayed there several times and it feels like home away from home. The units need some updating but are comfortable.
