We went on several day trips that we really enjoyed. Pyramid Lake is north of Reno, and the view of the high desert rising over an enormous lake nestled at the end of the Truckee River was so peaceful. I would recommend this trip for the views, and the fishing/ boating/birding are worthwhile. Another good day trip is up the Gieger Grade (Nevada 341) to Virginia City, a tourist-oriented museum/souvenir/casino town. The scenery was the biggest draw for us, but the silver mining and Mark Twain heritage was interesting. We also went on a day trip to Lake Tahoe for the scenery. Driving from Reno and going all the way around the lake was an easy one day trip with plenty of time for photos and meals. Reno is a little far away to stay if your primary focus is Tahoe, but it is under an hour's drive so you could go to Sandy Point Beach for the snorkeling, or one of the marinas for boating, etc. on a second day. We also took in Donner Pass; driving up the pass from Donner Lake made us wonder how on earth the early settlers could drive a team and wagon over that pass. It is a formidable trip in a car on the nice roads today. Our last trip was to Lassen Volcanic Park, a three-plus hour drive. Route 89 is a beautiful drive to the park through the awesome pine national forests. Once in the park, the drive to the 8700 foot side of Mt Lassen is lined with scenic pull-offs that feature spectacular views. The vents and high lakes are fascinating.
In the room, we found we did not miss having a range but we did miss a separate kitchen sink -- washing the dishes was awkward in the little dishpan. On the other hand, the Truckee River flowed through a neat park right across the street from the resort, a really nice feature and a restful place to spend the odd minute. We traded in here through RCI and are delighted with our experience.
Highly recommended!
