We just returned from staying at this resort for our second time since we purchased in 2003.
The resort was not overly crowded this time of year. The restaurant has changed ownership and is only open for breakfast and lunch. The resort is also under new ownership and has a location within walking distance/free shuttle service is offered to the new restaurant location that is opened for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We were very content and satisfied with the accommodations. The Infinity pool is awesome! What an experience to sit poolside and watch the beautiful Sunset!
We were assigned a third floor unit overlooking the ocean! Watching the sunset from our third floor balcony was awesome!
The Staff were remarkable and friendly. The restaurant food was tasty and appealing.
What a quiet way to spend a vacation or if you choose, party by the poolside. Happy hour Thursday through Saturday.
We felt like we were on a second honeymoon!
BY THE WAY, THE RESORT IS NOT UNDER CONSTRUCTION any longer!

We just returned, 10/9/06, We like to vacation during off season and realize you miss out on some of the high season attributes. For example the dining room was shut down as was the beach bar. Most of the staff were absent and those around were not quite able to provide quality service. However we were looking for quiet and no crowds and that is sort of what we found.
The room was very clean and after venting the fumigation fumes it was habital. Not as well equipped as it should be (no coffee pot, no hot water at first) but fine for us. Our two bedroom was really a large studio with an adjoining room. That was OK because we had a clear ocean view and surf about 100yards away.
The downside to Playa Maria is a ten story highrise going up about 40 feet away from your room. The constuction noise is pretty bad during the day. The new building also blocks the view on the left side of the property.
With all the problems we grew to like the place and recommend it if you can stand the construction noise. It is about five miles from the gold Zone so you dont have the heavy traffic or cruise ship crowd problems.

If you're looking for frills and to be catered to, this is not the place for you. If you're looking for a quiet atmosphere to relax, with beautiful views of the sunset at night and all the comforts of home then you might like this. Although a small resort, the rooms are very comfortable and the people are very friendly. There is daily maid service.
The infinity pool is heated and generally not crowded. The restaurant is average and we have only eaten there a couple of times. We generally go to the Market and cook in our room. The kitchen is great, with four burners, lots of storage and a 3/4 sized refrigerator which is plenty.
We have stayed three weeks and have friends who have stayed up to 11 weeks. The bus system is great and makes getting around easy.
This is a good home base where after a hard day of the Gold Zone, going Downtown or just sightseeing, you can return to the the peace and quiet of the ocean surf. Or you can just spend the day picking up shells on the beach and reading a book, in anticipation of the next sunset.

Small plain resort. More like an apartment complex than a resort. No restaurant, very small pool, limited things to do.
