Boy, wish I'd known about this when my kids were little! Anyway, why is it that renting a timeshare is the best kept secret in the travel industry?

If you own a timeshare week, you can do with it what you wish (ie: use it yourself, rent it out, deposit and exchange it, give it to someone, let it go unused, etc). You own that week .... you have a deed to that week, HOWEVER, and having said that, it's against RCI and II rules and regulations to RENT an exchanged week or SELL a deposited week. Once you deposit your week you no longer own it .... RCI or II owns it.
