Donating our timeshare

I have been dealing with Donate for a Cause since June 2011to donate my timeshare. Because mine was considered "desirable," it did not cost me anything (except for the $300 optional appraisal for tax purposes). To date, my file is still not complete, but it is in the final stages of being transferred back to the resort owner. My timeshare had a "right of first refusal" clause, so they chose to buy it back, albeit very cheaply. Because I chose a specific charity for the donation to go to, I will be following very closely to see it gets there.

My timeshare donation to Donate For A Cause is finally complete! While it took a full 10 months from beginning to end, it did work. My timeshare was purchased from DFC by the resort owner (Marriott). In a nutshell, they paid about $6,500 and my charity of choice received a check for about $2,800.

In order for a donation to be valid the 501C3 must take direct possession of the unit. Just taking possession of the week and not the actual deed to the unit does not suffice.

My timeshare was deeded to Donate for a Cause, then when they went to sell it, Marriott exercised their right of first refusal and bought it. Is this what you are referring to, travisd40?

Absolutely true. I have seen resorts do this on multiple occasions. Most resorts will work with you if you are up front with them. Just give them a call and tell them your situation. It may do wonders.
