My family just returned from HGVC-Kalia
Tower. The unit we were in was a 1 BR
oceanview, 12th floor. The unit was very nicely
furnished: the kitchen was a little smallish:
with an apartment sized refrigerator. There
was a full sized stove, dishwasher and
microwave. Strangely, the freezer didn't have
any icemaker or icecube trays. This is really
only a minor inconvenience, since there is an
icemaker on the floor. It was nice having daily
maid service: I do not know if that is standard
on exchanges: we visited the location on an
owner referral.
All in all, the unit was very nice and we
enjoyed our stay.
Having said that, here are some negatives
that should be considered. Parking is $13 per
day and is in a parking garage: not terribly
convenient: but it's a metro area, so not too
unusual.
The use of the workout area is also an extra
charge. If you are spending $250/night+, the
workout area ought to be free--I think.
The pool for the Kalia Tower is small and
closes at 8:00--very early and not convenient,
considering most people sightsee or hit the
beach during the day. There are also only a
limited number of chairs available and people
tend to "reserve" them early in the day(can
you say 7:00AM?) with a towel. I see this as
rude and, frankly selfish, since most people
don't show up until much later in the day. The
staff allows this practice at both this pool and
the "super" pool.
The "super pool", frankly, isn't. (it closes at
6:00 for a Hawaiian show)It is also slightly on
the small side for the size of the complex,
which encompasses 5 tower hotels.
I find the grounds too busy to be relaxing--
traffic goes through much of the grounds to
get from tower to tower. It is definitely a big
city hotel and not relaxing in my opinion.
I also don't see the hotel as being within
walking distance of the main shopping area for
most people.
I did not find the staff friendly or helpful in any
way. I tried to get a dryer fixed on our floor for
over a week--no luck. There are only 2
washers and dryers per floor, so don't plan on
having one in the unit.
I had a difficult time trying to get the lay of the
property. I found out on the 4th day that
there is a tour of the property that you can
take to let someone show you around--it
wasn't mentioned at check-in. (It also wasn't
included in the timeshare presentation that is
pushed fairly hard.)
Trying to find out how to get downtown was a
trick as well-- it was as if they did not want
you to leave the site.(I suspect this is the
case) You do not have to leave if you don't
want to. There is an ABC store, gift shops, and
several restaurants onsite: most fairly high
priced so not particularly appealing to a family,
and several requiring dress that was classified
as resort wear--no shorts allowed. To many
people this is not a problem, but you should
be aware that it could be an issue if your
suitcase only sports shorts and a bathing suit!
Parking in the downtown area is ridiculous, $2
for 20 minutes, with a $25 maximum. You can
take the city bus for $2 each way per person.
If you want to eat/shop in the main area of
Waikiki, I recommend this. There is also a
trolley that runs along Ala Moana for the same
fee. Don't use the regular trolley, ask for the
pink line. The regular trolley is $25/day per
person!!
