SOK is a great resort. as an owner we come every 2 years and enjoy ourselves we are not far from Lahaina. You won't be sorry if you stayed here. The staff is great.
Great beachfront resort! Very friendly staff and clean!
Great resort close to the ocean. Perfect for older couples or families. Not a ton of walking just to get to the beach. Check out pictures of the resort. Tennis courts and beach volleyball are perfect for families. Nice and reasonably priced restaurant on the property and McDonalds is one block away. Large units originally built as condos, away from all the big crowds at Kaanapali beach. If you are looking for a nice comfortable, less crowded resort, this is the place for you. This is not a Westin or Marriott but perfect for real families that want to be close to the ocean and don't want to walk for 10 minutes to get to the beach or pools!
The Sands of Kahana is located on a quiet(er) beach in West Maui between Lahaina and Kapalua, providing entertainment opportunities in both directions. What is most impressive about the Sands of Kahana, especially the 3BR units, is the size of the units. The 3BR (which we own) is over 2,500 sq. feet and is designed like a condo/apartment vs. a hotel. Every unit comes with a full kitchen, which helps keep food expenses down; there are also several outdoor grills to prepare food.
We have tried to visit every other year and from the time our kids hit their pre-teen years they preferred the Sands of Kahana over the Marriott (where we also own) and other resorts closer to Lahaina and Kaanapali Beach. They appreciate the privacy and size of the condo and we always find plenty to do with the Kahana area as our home base; there are plenty of activities in either direction (including great whale watching right from the resort during the winter months). We have seen noticeable improvements every time we have visited, whether it be new furniture, new paint, additional activities, or the completely refurbished (and beautiful) tennis court area.
We love to stay at the Sands where it is a bit less frenzied but still close enough to hang out in Lahaina, which we frequently do. We especially appreciate the full kitchen and in-room laundry. Having a washer/dryer in the room allows us to pack much more lightly. We also frequent the beach hut to rent equipment and have utilized the activity planning desk every time we have come. Good prices and lots of great suggestions.
We believe it is the best value on the island, not to mention being one of the few places on Maui that offers 3BR units that very comfortably sleep 8 - 10 people. We are looking forward to our next visit!

This was a great place for my family. We go to Maui for the beach, and we think the beach at this resort is wonderful! It doesn't show as good on photos because it is not white sand, but it is a wonderful soft "tan" sand. The beach has something for everyone. Right as you exit the resort onto the beach the waves are calm enough for very young children. Twenty-thirty feet to the right or left, they start getting zippier enough to be exciting for older kids and adults. If you follow the beach to the left there is an outcropping of rocks...with sea turtles and snorkeling. We counted 7 sea turtles there one day. And twice during our two weeks a seal was there. Follow the beach to the right for a nice walk and to see the black sand. If this sounds like your kind of thing, you will love the Sands of Kahana. Looking at my maui guidebooks I would have to say this is the most underappreciated beach on the island...which is why it is wonderfully private!
The units were huge too. Ours was a 3 bedroom and it said it could fit 8. That doesn't count the fact that it has a large L shaped couch that could fit two more people (adult size) or be used pulled out to a bed. In my family we always try to use condos instead of hotels because everyone sleeps so much better if they have enough space! We slept great at the Sands. We did have to leave windows and doors open for air (we had two balconies) but we enjoy hearing the ocean/wind/rain. The unit is a bit quirky in the way it is set up. Like there is a window in the shower, and there are so many closets you could not possibly fill them. But we were able to comfortably fit 11 of us in our condo when my extended family (staying at a different condo) came for the day and to join us for dinner & games. We were even able to bring in the table & chairs off the balcony so that everyone could sit at a table and eat together; and you could still walk past all of that to the living room without it being in the way. We tried to do the same at their condo. We made the best of it for two hours and then left.
Lastly the resort was generous with towels/linens/ dishsoap/laundry detergent. We stayed at the Marriott last time and it was great, but you felt paranoid about someone taking your towel, because you only get one...and you have to keep track of it with a card system or you pay for it. I was so happy when we got to the Sands and opened the huge closets in the hall to see it stocked with towels!!
Great snorkeling is really close, although you have to get in the car and drive to it. 10 minutes to Black Rock. Other choices too.
We have two complaints: 1. the pool should be slightly heated. But really, with the ocean & beach right there I don't think it would have made too much difference to us. We did enjoy the hot tub. 2. The elevator is slow. Minor inconveniences...
My husband and I have purchased 4 weeks annual use in an orchid unit and love the Sands and Maui. So if you are looking for an objective review, this isn' it. The units are huge, there's even a washing machine and dryer so you can leave some of the wardrobe at home, the entire family can stay , two bedrooms have king size master suite, two double beds in the the second unit, there are two full baths, and a large kitchen, saves on the food budget, these were condominiums, the place is very clean, the furnishings are being upgraded, the staff is spot on in courtesy and service, the four buildings are ocean front, you are near Lahaina, Kapalua, Napili Bay, and McDonalds, there is a new children's pool, and multiple outside gas grills for cooking. From ocean view and ocean front units you will see whales in season, beautiful sunsets, make dinner with your family, fall asleep listening to the ocean surf, visit Lahaina, snorkel at Honoloa Marine sanctuary.
Been an owner for 15 years you can say what you want, rate this place but I have been an owner this long and have always had a wonderful stay, there is no perfect place where we always give high marks but there staff is always trying to help in a fast and appropriate way. Love to stay here and also own at the Marriott, yes it is newer but long way to beaches and not as quiet,
Spacious 3 BR unit floor plan (building 4, 3rd floor, garden view) accommodated family travel group nicely. Wonderful views with walls of windows in common spaces and bedrooms. Large, well-equipped kitchen and several great outside grilling areas on grounds. Parking abundant and free. Easy walk to sand beach and easy driving distance to numerous beaches and snorkeling opportunities. Conveniently located near supermarket, restaurants, gas station, and snorkeling/scuba rentals. Units not air-conditioned but tradewinds kept unit very comfortable. Wireless internet not included; subscription to Maui Skywave provided wireless economically. Somewhat noisy (due to open windows), especially the daily garbage truck and the unit location near trash chute. Lanai furniture could be updated and more chairs needed to seat the maximum number of occupants. Quick response from maintenance when window blinds malfunctioned.
This is the best "small company" timeshare on Maui. It is not quite in the same league as the Marriott Maui Ocean Club, Westin Kaanapaali or Ritz Carlton timeshares, but it is the best one of the class right below those guys.
The Sands has a semi-private swimmable beach. Most Lahaina resorts do not have beaches that you can swim at.
Units are large. Kitchens have EVERYTHING you will need to cook meals for the entire family. The 3 bedroom comes with 2 seperate Lanai's for watching the waves. Furniture is kept in great condition. The beds are a tad soft for me, but you can't please everyone.
Restaurant is inexpensive, has daily food and drink specials and is pretty good. Roy's Restaurant is walking distance and has EXCELLENT food. Kaanapalli and Lahaina are quick drives. Resort has dozens of outdoor Barbeques that are cleaned daily, 2 pools that are nice and a Hot Tub. Sand Volleyball Court and a Vacation room which lets you borrow books or games for the family.
We have owned there for 10 years, and love returning every year.
Just stayed at the Sands of Kahana in March 2010. We have stayed at this resort several times at different times of the year. It is absolutely one of the best places to stay on the island of Maui. I cannot imagine that anyone could find fault with this resort! We have stayed in units in all the buildings and find that they are all extremely comfortable. I have looked at many of the resorts in Maui and have found that the Sands of Kahana is superior to most and is a great value! I do believe that the Marriott Ocean Club is a fine resort, but at a cost that is just too high! If money is no object, stay at the Marriott, but even then, their A/C is designed to sense motion and so, it goes off at night when you are sleeping! Many of the resorts that do have A/C actually have inadequate systems.
Even the garden view units here usually have a pretty good view of the ocean! We had a garden view unit this year and actually had a wonderful view of the ocean and were able to really watch the whales breaching just offshore!!!!
The units are all over sized with plenty of room to spread out, even with a large crowd! Even on the warmest days, the units have always been most comfortable and in the evenings even have to get out the blankets.
The resort has great amenities, pool, jacuzzi, and the restaurant has made great improvements during the last year. Breakfast was a treat with a spectular view of the ocean!!
When we stay at the Sands of Kahana we truly feel like we are home. The convenience to all the excitement of the town of Lahaina along with the close proximity to some of the best snorkeling in Maui help make this place my FIRST choice of accomodations in Maui. If you have a chance to stay here, book it right away!!!
Just got back from one week in a two bedroom unit. This was our first time at the Sands of Kahana and I don't think we'll be back...for one reason only. The no A/C in the units did us in. We happened to be there when the trade winds were uncharacterically calm so there was a lack of "ocean breeze" to cool the unit. I think had there been the trade winds we might have still had a problem based on the location of the unit. We were in building 4, 3rd floor and although we had a grand view of the ocean, I think the other buildings blocked the breeze. We found if we left our door open which faced back of building, we could get a breeze but that obviously wasn't safe. Also, because you have to leave all windows open in hopes of getting a breeze it was extremely noisy. We were awakened by crying babies, maintenance staff, etc.....oh and the sprinklers that went on each morning at 3:30 am. Other than this, the staff and grounds are great and the 2 BR unit was very spacious and quite nice, except there was a mildewy smell in the bathrooms which do not get any ventilation.
We have stayed at the Sands of Kahana for many years and have loved our time there. It truly feels like home as we gather family together in the large rooms that are very open and airy. Each seem to have great views, especially compared to other Hawaiian resorts. We have always felt safe there. The restaurant by the pool is such a wonderful convenience when you just want to stay close to home, yet eat outside with the panoramic views of the ocean. The ceiling fans have always been more than adequate as the cool breezes have kept our rooms comfortable. We typically leave our door facing the water open to be serenaded by the ocean waves rolling on the beach. The lanai on the front of the building has been a delightful place to eat our breakfasts as we scan the water for whales. Our time at the Sands is a time we look forward to every year.
Very pleased at a recent stay at the Sands of Kahana. West Maui is our absolute favorite side of the island and the beach right in front is one of the best. The rooms were very spacious and appeared to be recently remodeled. The pool was crowded, (think they could use a bigger pool), but everything else was near perfect.
We came to Maui June 2008 and stayed at the Westin Kaanapolli resort. It was 5 star and we loved our trip so much we looked into buying a timeshare resale while in hawaii. The realtor we spoke to recommended Sands of Kahana b/c the prices are lower and it trades well if you don't always want to come back to Hawaii every year. My husband and I were so excited we drove down and checked this place out. We thought is was a dump compaired to the Westin or Marriott!!!!! It was very outdated and there was no A/C and it was very muggy in the rooms. It didn't feel all that safe b/c you had to leave your windows by the front door opened in order to get any breeze going thru at all and the stairs were all concrete and it seemed to echo outside the rooms like it would be noisy if there were traffic........only hardly anyone stays here it seemed! It is no wonder! There are so many other MUCH nicer places to stay. I will say the rooms were VERY large and fully functional if you don't need/expect much. If you are on a limited budget and have low expectations then this place would be OK. If you like staying in nice name brand timeshare resorts you will not be happy here. We came back June 2009 and stayed at the Marriott it was also a 5 star. (But get one of the new buildings at Marriott)
Excellent! We are here NOW, March 2009 for one week. What a beautiful place. The sunset from our porch, the grounds, the beach, the privacy, and the whales all over the bay just off shore. The hot tub and pool are great and there is even a happy hour at the restaurant next to the pool. We used the outdoor grill to cook burgers and dogs and had a great dinner, saving tons of money vs eating out. The units are EXTRA, EXTRA large units and have everything needed. The kitchen is large and has a full fridg with icemaker and water in the door, Washer/Dryer, dishwasher with free soaps, etc. The day temps are perfect with windows open and the ocean surf sounds lingering into the rooms. Nighttime temps dropped only a few degrees but you will want to close most of the windows and sleep with a sheet or a light blanket. I have NEVER needed or wanted a/c at this place. Located on the portion of the island that is windy and cool, the humidity is lower than expected for beachfront and is actually perfect day and night. I cannot say enough good tings about this beautiful property. This is my second time here and I will come again. We felt like we are home and it is absolutely one of the best places to stay on the island of Maui.
We own a unit at Sands of Kahana and the Marriott Ocean Villas. We have only stayed at the Marriott one time and have rented it out the past three years because the Marriott packs their guests in so tightly and Kaanapali in general is so congested. Sands of Kahana has huge units and great views of the whales. The people are all friendly, the units and grounds are all well maintained and the ocean breezes make up for the fact that there is no AC. The Marriott has AC, but the room remained hot because the AC is set to only go down to a certain temp and will shut off if it does not sense movement in the room - like when we were sleeping. Sands of Kahana is a great place to come with a large group because the common areas, lanai, and kitchen are huge. The washer and dryer in the units are a plus and having the grills to cook on made for some nice family evenings. We come back every year for at least a week.
We traded with II into the Sands of Kahana for a 1 week stay Aug 23 - 30, 2008. We were in unit 152. Overall this property is excellent. There were no problems at all. The suite is HUGE. It is a 2 bedroom - the master bedroom with a king bed. The front room had a queen hide a bed. The 2nd bedroom was a bit small, with 2 single beds. The kitchen, dining room and all common areas of the suite were very spacious. The overall property was well kept and very beautiful. This place is right on the beach and a very quiet beach used almost exclusively by "Sands" guests. In our experience, this place had the best so far (for us) sales pressure to do the usual 90 minute presentation. They wanted to give us discounts for all the tours and sites to see, but in order to get the "deep" discounts, we had to take the tour / presentation. That was it! We said no thanks, and never heard from them again. The only down side was there is no air conditioning in the unit. For me personally, not a problem at all. My wife would have liked the AC. There are ceiling fans in the suite and thee was an almost constant breeze / wind of some sort. We will go back, and highly recommend this property.
Stayed here recently, and we really enjoyed the location near great snorkling and boogie boarding, bbq areas, local happy hour in the bar, and small private beach. The rooms are large, and we ate on the lanai everynight with the family. Only negative was no AC and outdated elevator that kept breaking down.
We've stayed at the Sands for 5 years now. Its the best. The staff (except for the front desk) is great. The BBQ grills are cleaned everyday. The grounds are clean and the rooms are huge. When we get a suite that's up high we can watch the whales with binoculars. Kids love it here. Lots to do. The kitchen has everything. Everything works. There are lots of towels and a washer and dryer in the suite. I found the place to be clean, quite and secure. We'll keep going back.
Candi7 does prove there is an ass for every seat. Stayed in October and loved it. I have said for thirty years I would never buy a timeshare to trade. If I would not use it every year and when I died my kids would not love it I would not buy it. Well I have bought two and want two more. Does not feel like a hotel room but like a home most of us cannot afford.
The resort is nice and right on the beach. I stayed here for the first time in May 2006. I have mixed feelings about this property. When we arrived, our room was not ready, and it was already 3:30pm. Our room was huge; bigger than any other timeshare unit I've ever seen in Maui. I like visiting in May because because the tradewinds keep the temp cool. However, this time we experienced a heat wave in the middle of our trip. Our unit felt like an oven at night. Everyone in our unit was miserable. This place has got to upgrade and install air conditioning!! I'm used to the heat; I live in California, but the heat in the unit was unbearable, even with the ceiling fans!! The heat kept us up all night, and even with the windows open, there was no breeze because our unit was blocked by two buildings. I will never stay here again, but for what it's worth, it is a nice property. The staff was attentive and friendly.
What an awesome resort!! we just got back from hawaii and stayed here for one week!! Simply cannot say enough about this resort. The unit was an ocean view, and huge beyond belief! Everything you needed was there!! Even laundry detergent. THe best would return in a new york minute!!!
After 7 visits we think it is the best resort in West Maui. It's on the beach with a restaurant and other major restaurants within walking distance. Close to golf - just the best!!
We have a 2 bedroom unit at the Sands Of Kahana. Resort staff is freindly with activites for both adults and children. Close to Lahaina and Kannapali beach. Units are very large, so they're wonderful for large families or multiple couples. Units are on the beach with soft gentle waves easily heard. Great for sleeping!
We have owned at the Sands since 1996 and we love it. We have stayed at other places on Maui and on the other islands. There is no other place like the Sands.
The beach, the grounds, the privacy, the spacious units. It is all good. The staff have always been helpful and responsive. We alwasys go during whale season and have seen countless whales from the lanai. We are able to exchange this week, but we have never done so and don't intend to.
We just stayed here last week 8/14 - 8/21 and it was GREAT!! We had the Penthouse in building 2 and the view was absolutley wonderful. There was a constant breeze that came through the windows and balconies and the temperature was great. I would recommend this resort to anyone. Yes it could use some renovations, but we were very satisfied with it. Would definitley recommend going to Costco to do your shopping - much better food selection and you will pay much less than going to the store down the road from the resort.
Our family of six stayed at this resort in April 2005. We stayed in the penthouse unit in building 2. The view from the room was spectacular. The staff was very friendly and helpful as were the activities director.
The three bedroom unit was very large but in need of renovation. We had little privacy due to the floor plan. This resort has no A/C in the rooms. When we opened the two lanai doors at night to cool the room down every door in the unit rattled. The beach and restaurant at this resort were average at best.
We had a nice time but I need a quiet room, A/C, and privacy in order to get a good nights rest from the days activities.
Obviously Candi7 should have stayed at the Hilton! We have many timeshares and would NEVER trade this one for ANYTHING! Location, location, location! Restaurant food is great and reasonable, pool seems adequate except for Christmas break or Spring break, but overall we were so impressed we bought 1 week a few years ago, and another last year. Going again this weekend, and can't wait. You could trade this resort for ANYWHERE in the WORLD at the drop of a dime!
Stayed at this resort 3 different times, September 2003, May 2004 and September 2004. It is a wonderful resort located right on the sandy beaches of Kahana. It is very convenient to have a sandy beach and a restaraunt on the premise. The rooms and the grounds were very well kept. It was very pleasant as it is not a mega resort but rather a nice secluded and quiet complex.
We enjoyed our stay so much that we planned our next year's vacation to this resort for 1 week in June 2005 and 4 weeks in August/September 2005.
I highly recommend this resort to any and all especially if you need a 3 bedroom unit.
Stayed there over Spring Break. We loved the views and the grounds were fantastic and well groomed. The beach is wonderful and the pools were relaxing. There is a tennis court on site and BBQ's everywhere. We also went snorkeling and kayaking. Torches are lit everynight. From our balcony we could see many whales.
Our unit was huge. The rooms are large and there is a full kitchen with a washer and dryer. We could sleep 8 in our unit. They had fun activities for the kids everyday. (We painted coconuts and still have them in the kids rooms.) We felt safe at the resort and we had fun catching the geckos in the gardens.
This condo is close to shopping and restaurants. There is also a grocery store nearby.
July 2004 Stayed here for a week and what a joke this place is. The only thing going for it was the size of the units and they were nicely renovated, but as for the "resort", YUCK! The pool was so disgusting I wouldn't let my kids swim in it. The "activities director" was rude and totally unprepared. You could get a better nights sleep at a construction site. I was really disappointed. Never again.
July 3 - July 17, 2004
We just finished staying for two weeks at the Sands of Kahana and had a fabulous time. The units are HUGE (1800 sq. ft. for 2 bedroom). Although there is no air conditioning, the units are designed for airflow and with the trade winds, we were never hot. In fact, sleeping to the cool breezes and listening to the ocean surf was a joy I had forgotten with air-conditioned units.
The resort has 8 grilling areas and we cooked many meals in the huge kitchen (and thanks to Cosco for better prices than last visit).
Kahana is just past Kaanapali (where we stayed last time) and is less crowded. The pool is nice, but a little small; the spa was wonderful - many lawn chairs, very helpful staff.
The restaurant on-site (adjacent to the pool and open air) was a wonderful place when we didn't want to cook.
This was definately our best Hawiian experience to date.
Stayed March 28-April 4, 2004. First time there and so impressed. Had a one bedroom unit. HUGE. Full kitchen means full kitchen. Whirlpool gold microwave, dishwasher, stove, and full size refrig and freezer. Even a garbage disposal. Brought food at Costco and cooked most meals there so saved tons. Gas BBQ's everywhere. You could grill, have a beer, and talk to other guests. So nice. We had two lanas, one overlooking the ocean where we counted over 30 whales during our stay.
Activities everyday. Games for kids, coconut painting, sarong tying, storytelling and legends of Hawaii. So much. Wonderful people to help you schedule outings if you wanted to leave the resort. Fantastic secure room for putting your luggage in on check out day, so you could enjoy the resort all day at the ocean or by the pool then shower that evening before you go to the airport late. First resort I have seen like this. Underground covered parking. Awesome.
Bathrooms were wonderful. Nicer than we have at home. Tons of room to unpack and spread out. Cupboards under sinks and 6 drawers besides. Even 4 shelf cupboard above the toilets. Much appreciated. Stackable washer and dryer in your own unit. Used it all the time.
The resort is fantastic. We were there spring break with tons of families there. Always room at either pool and extra chaise lounges by the ocean. Private to the max. Had other resort people looking because they hated the noise at their resorts.
Landscaping is beautiful, lush, georgous. Great volleyball court that they rake out everymorning.
We loved our week here and would gladly recommend it to everyone.
We stayed here Feb 29-Mar 7, 2004. The pool is small for the amount of units here & VERY COLD. The lobby area is nice, but they run TOO many people thru their "tours" trying to sell timeshares. It was very annoying because the elevator was broken most of the time. The beach was good & the hot tub was ok, not really hot! The place needs a really good cleaning, both outside & inside. There are much better places to stay on Maui!
6 of us stayed here in 2001. We loved the Penthouse suite - very large. The beach is close and beautiful and the barbeques are fantastic. They were always clean and well maintained as well as the grounds. The location for us was perfect. I highly recommend this resort to everyone.
huge condos with all amenities, nice beach, quiet area of West Maui. Minutes to world class golf. I own 2 weeks and would never consider trading or going anywhere else.
Great facilities, excellent service, and the best condo location in West Maui. Right on the beach, away from more crowded hotel areas. Super value.
