Timeshare Points Introduction

Many of the timeshares sold today are more flexible than timeshares of the past, and owners no longer must visit the same unit in the same resort for the same week each year. One of the programs that has assisted in creating the flexibility is timeshare points.

Points are sometimes offered to timeshare owners by resorts and allow the owners choice and control over when and where they vacation as well as the length of their stay. Instead of purchasing a week of timeshare, these owners have purchased what the developer has determined to be the equivalent number of points.

As an example, let's say that you own 70,000 points. The developer of your resort may have chosen the following values for their various resort locations:

  • Hawaii:
  • Orlando:
  • Myrtle Beach:
  • Branson, MO:
  • Virginia Beach, VA:

  • 10,000 points per night
  • 10,000 points per night
  • 7,000 points per night
  • 5,000 points per night
  • 2,500 points per night

With your 70,000 points, you may choose to travel to Hawaii or Orlando and stay for a week. You could also spend ten days in Myrtle Beach or a full two weeks in Branson. However, if you are unable to get away for an entire week at a time, perhaps you will choose to spread your vacation time out over the year. You could spend five nights in Orlando in the spring, a weekend in Virginia Beach in the summer, and three nights in Branson later in the year.

As you can see, not only can timeshare points increase the flexibility of owning a timeshare, but they often can give you "more bang for your buck." In addition, many developers are beginning to offer other ways to use your points, including rental cars, airplane tickets, theme park and other attraction tickets, and more.

Quick Tip:

Timeshare points systems may allow more flexibility, but they can be very complex. If you aren't familiar with a points system, be sure to collect as much information as possible, from the seller as well as the resort development company directly, prior to buying.
