This is my home resort, so I'm a bit biased. The Marriott Grand Residence Club is one of the nicest places to stay in all of Lake Tahoe. The staff are friendly and go that extra mile to make you feel welcome. The property was built in 2002, but it looks brand new. Marriott keeps the rooms and the common areas very well maintained.
Ronald118 is correct, though. It is not a tranquil or rural setting and it is not next to the lake. The lake is about a 5 minute walk. Though, I have found the resort to be quiet even on the Lake Tahoe Blvd side and on the pool side. No drunken college students and mostly no screaming or spoiled children. If you open up your balcony and set outside, it might be nosier by the pool at times, but not much.
I looked at a number of properties in the South Lake Tahoe area before deciding on the Marriott Grand Residence. Besides the service and comfort of the resort, I liked the idea of fractional ownership and the ability to predict exactly which weeks each year my unit would be available for me. And, they participate in both Interval International as well as Marriott Destinations.
The other factor was that the resort *is* close (walking) to shopping, movie theaters, grocery stores, good restaurants, the lake, a day spa, the casinos, and other activities. The Heavenly Ski Resort gondola and the resort provides a ski/board check right next to the gondola. When I settling in to my room after a day of skiing or boating or whatever, it is nice to walk next door for dinner or groceries as opposed to getting in the car and driving somewhere.
